I drove away with the gas nozzle still in my gas tank. How much would the damages cost me?

The other week accidentally drove off with the gas nozzle still in my gas tank at the Arco am/pm. The hose broke loose, I went into the store to tell the gas attendant, and he said it probably wouldn't cost much to fix but he took down my driver's license and information anyway because it was "protocol for his manager". Today I got a letter from BP West Coast Products LLC Claims Management group of BP saying that I have to pay for the damages since I am "liable and responsible to reimburse BP
