Property Management company taking us to small claims court, what can I do?

We recently purchased a home. Before that, we lived in a rental home for a little over a year. The rental home is about 15 years old. When we moved in, the carpet had not been cleaned. There were stains in some of the rooms. The property management company did not do a walk through w/ us in the beginning (partly our fault, we should have made them do one, but we didn't.). After moving out, they told us that we owed them $3000 to replace all the carpet in the home. (This house is 1200 sq. ft.,
